we will not be trapped by the heavens

By Sage Lai

it was inevitable that we would eventually go awry,

for everything we knew was founded upon a blatant lie.

never was escape a promise, but we couldn’t live if we never dared to try.

we sought to defy; we were consumed by an intrinsic desire to fly —

ingurgitating gluttons on a euphoric high.

and how vast the breadth from the zenith we could espy!

we had gone too far for our hopes to shrivel like petals and die.

until the end, we still continued to deny when we felt it

within our core that the hour of our punishment was nigh.

through every bulwark, you were my steadfast ally.

why are you turning your head, whilst you dry each eye?

my dearest, don’t let them see you cry out to the ethereal sky.

swear you won’t ever let go of our eternal tie —

contain your curiosity, heed my work and ask no questions why.

deep inside, you know that this is most certainly not our last good-bye.
